Why are my nails popping off?
Proper nail prep and application are key to making your nails last longer. I'll go over the reasons why your press-on nails may be popping off and ways to properly prep and apply your nails.
Is there anything more annoying than doing a great at-home manicure and then noticing two days later that your nails are peeling off one by one?
Hopefully, this isn't an emergency, because a) press-on nails are reusable and b) here are instructions on what you can do about it in the future. Let's start!
WRONG SIZE
One of the most common reasons for your nails to pop is... the wrong size of your press-on nails. If your press-on nails are too small or too big, they won't stick properly and even a small push or jolt will cause the nail to come off. So be careful when measuring your nails. A size guide is ultimately your best friend when it comes to finding the right size.
Models that are not suitable for your lifestyle, i.e. are often too long, often also cause your nails to bump into different places, which weakens the adhesive/tape bond.
OIL
If your nails are at all oily when you apply your press-on nails, there is a high chance that your nails will come off prematurely because the glue/sticker will not be able to adhere properly to your nails. So it is really important that you clean your nails really well before applying your nails and avoid touching them after cleaning. Sometimes it is surprising how much of an effect even a small amount of oil can have.
If you have naturally oily skin, your nails may be too. In this case, I recommend using a nail dehydrator or even acetone, which will dry out the surface of the nail.
FIXATION
I cannot stress the importance of proper application! So follow the instructions that came with your nails carefully and be very careful with the application of the glue/adhesive size. It is very important that you apply the nail at a 45 degree angle downwards from the nail bed and press the nail for at least 10-15 seconds to allow the bond to form.
WATER AND DETERGENTS
Nail glue and adhesive tape take a few hours to form a strong bond. Exposing your nails to water too early will weaken the bond and lead to premature nail detachment. Once your nails are finally attached, it is a good idea to avoid soaking your nails in water for a long time, especially detergent water. So, wear dishwashing gloves when washing dishes.
WEAK GLUE
The glue that comes with store-bought press-on nails is rarely of good quality, which results in the nail coming off. For KYIORA nails, I have personally tested different glues and ended up with Makartti. It easily holds the nails for two to three weeks, as long as you prep and apply them well and don't soak your hands in water unnecessarily - or bang your nails against the back of the sofa (don't ask).
By taking these things into account, you will already go a long way. Since KYIORA nails are made just for you, that in itself helps with the durability of the nails. However, if you have any questions, you can always reach out to me via email or Instagram.
